The Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa (CMAAA) successfully held its annual meeting in Johannesburg, welcoming all executive members to discuss the association’s growth and future initiatives.

During the meeting, CMAAA President, Prof. Zijing Hu, provided an overview of the association’s recent achievements and ongoing development, highlighting the association’s commitment to advancing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Africa.

A key announcement was the establishment of a collaboration with the Sichuan Provincial Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which led to the founding of the International TCM Medical Centre of Distinguished Sichuan Experts—the first centre of its kind in South Africa.

Through this collaboration, CMAAA members participated in intensive training in Chengdu in July 2025, focusing on Pestle Needle Therapy, recognised as one of China’s national intangible cultural heritages. This marked the first introduction of Pestle Needle Therapy to South Africa, with CMAAA members acting as pioneers in bringing this traditional expertise to benefit the African public.

During discussions, the executive team proposed a series of strategies to further promote Chinese medicine and acupuncture, including enhancing professional training, fostering research collaborations, expanding community outreach programmes, and integrating TCM practices into broader public health initiatives. These strategies aim to support the improvement of public health and ensure that the benefits of TCM reach more communities across Africa.

CMAAA continues to strengthen international collaborations, promote TCM education, and enhance access to traditional therapies for communities across the continent.
