On Sunday, 13 April 2025, the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa (CMAAA) organized a community outreach event in the heart of Johannesburg’s CBD, delivering free Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consultations and treatments to members of the public.

This initiative is part of CMAAA’s ongoing public health campaign to promote wellness and introduce the benefits of TCM to a broader audience in South Africa. The event was staffed by licensed practitioners and volunteers, offering services including acupuncture, cupping therapy, and tuina massage, as well as general wellness consultations based on TCM principles.

Local residents from all walks of life came forward to experience these natural and non-invasive treatment methods. Many participants expressed relief from chronic conditions such as back pain, joint stiffness, and stress-related fatigue. Others were curious to learn about how ancient Chinese healing techniques could complement their overall health routines.

“We are here to serve the people and bridge traditional Chinese wisdom with modern community needs,” said Dr Zijing Hu, President of CMAAA. “By offering hands-on care in public spaces like the CBD, we hope to make Chinese medicine more visible, approachable, and inclusive.”
In addition to treatments, the outreach included educational talks on self-care practices, dietary tips according to seasonal health principles, and TCM approaches to preventive care. Informational leaflets and multilingual materials were distributed to enhance public understanding of holistic health and TCM safety.
This successful event reflects CMAAA’s growing role in community health promotion and cultural exchange. The organization plans to expand its outreach to more urban and rural communities in the coming months.
