Sino-Africa Medical Bridge Wins First Prize at the 5th China-Africa Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
The “Sino-Africa Medical Bridge” project has achieved another significant milestone, winning First Prize in the Africa Regional Final of the 5th China-Africa Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition on 7 October 2026.
The competition was jointly organised by the China Science and Technology Exchange Center and the Department of Science and Technology of Hubei Province, and hosted by the China-Africa Innovation Cooperation Center. It provides an important platform for young innovators to develop solutions addressing shared challenges and strengthening China-Africa cooperation.

The Sino-Africa Medical Bridge project focuses on an important question: How can Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) be meaningfully localised and developed to serve the health needs of African communities? Rather than simply introducing the Chinese model of Chinese medicine into Africa, the project explores an Africa-oriented development model based on local healthcare needs, professional training, clinical practice, research, innovation and international collaboration. The vision is to build a sustainable bridge connecting Chinese medical knowledge with African healthcare needs.

From the perspective of the University of Johannesburg and the African Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association (CMAAA), the project represents an emerging model of China-Africa health cooperation through TCM. It highlights the potential of Chinese medicine and acupuncture to contribute to healthcare innovation, rehabilitation, community wellbeing and professional development in Africa. The project also reflects a broader principle: internationalisation should not be a one-way transfer of knowledge, but a process of mutual learning, adaptation and co-creation. By working with African institutions, healthcare professionals and communities, TCM can develop in ways that are culturally appropriate, locally relevant and sustainable.

Winning First Prize in the Africa Regional Final is therefore not only recognition of the project’s innovation, but also an encouragement to continue exploring “African solutions with Chinese wisdom” and new pathways for China-Africa cooperation in health.
Looking ahead, the Sino-Africa Medical Bridge team will continue to strengthen partnerships across China and Africa, promote TCM education and research, and explore practical models through which Chinese medicine can better serve African health and contribute to stronger people-to-people ties between China and Africa.
Bridging China and Africa through medicine, innovation and shared knowledge—building a healthier future together.
